We see these a lot on the trail because they are easy to pack and light weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its small configuration, the <strong>REI Traverse <\/strong>is reasonably lightweight, and its modular features improve packability. Most importantly, you can still open and close it with cold hands since there is no pushing or squeezing needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>BearVault BV450 Jaunt <\/strong>and <strong>BearVault BV500 Journey <\/strong>work reasonably well under normal conditions, but their twist-off lids are a challenge with cold hands. The mechanism demands finger strength, and the canister can be slippery and hard to grip. Their redeeming features are the large opening and transparent walls, which make food organization very easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Bare Boxer Champ <\/strong>and <strong>Counter Assault Bearkeg <\/strong>are both opaque canisters that require a tool to open. As long as you have something available, they are easy to use with cold hands. The Bearkeg has a touch more usability thanks to its wider opening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>REI Traverse<\/strong>, although neat and innovative in design, could use some improvement. In addition, they are very solidly built \u2013 a quality that is reflected in their heftier weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Grubcan Carbon 6.6 <\/strong>shares a lot of the same qualities as well \u2013 opaque, sturdy, and grizzly and black bear tested \u2013 but is built with slightly lighter material. It also doesn\u2019t require a tool to open, so it\u2019s conceivable that a bear could figure it out, but it&#8217;s unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BearVault canisters like the <strong>BV450 Jaunt <\/strong>and <strong>BV500 Journey <\/strong>are effective most of the time in most scenarios, however, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation <a href=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/nature\/animals-fish-plants\/black-bear\/management\/bear-resistant-canisters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">canisters made of clear plastic have been &#8216;defeated&#8217; by bears<\/a>. It\u2019s also approved by the IGBC and WMI for use against black bears and grizzlies. The Journey is their largest model, capable of holding a week\u2019s worth of food or more, but BearVault offers four different sizes to suit any trip length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Bare Boxer Champ <\/strong>is Bare Boxer\u2019s largest model can hold about five to six days of food with roughly 10.7 liters of packable space. To pass, it must stay intact and functional. This certification is the industry standard \u2013 many agencies state that any <a href=\"https:\/\/igbconline.org\/programs\/bear-resistant-products\/\">IGBC-approved container<\/a> is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WMI &#8211; Wildlife Management Institute<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifemanagement.institute\/project\/black-bear-resistant-product-testing\/\">Wildlife Management Institute<\/a> focuses more on black bears, a key distinction since they are typically more savvy scavengers than grizzly bears. Like the IGBC test, the WMI\u2019s captive bear test involves the container enduring 60 minutes of continuous effort by a black bear, which must maintain its functional and structural integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SIBBG &#8211; Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The SIBBG was an agency that tested bear canisters for efficacy against black bears in the Sierra Nevada. Although the SIBBG is no longer active, you\u2019ll still see their stamp of approval on some bear canisters.
